Contributed by: Julie, an aspiring nurse about her visit to Windrush during her rehabilitation rotation
"…upon arriving I was introduced to 4 women, all of whom are disabled. Two of the women were able to get onto the horses with minimal assistance and the other two other needed to utilize a lift appliance to get them onto their horse.
After the lesson I was able to chat with the riders and ask questions. I got one answer that was so profound that I believe it has changed me! I am reminded how fortunate I am. I had asked the question, "What does horseback riding do for you that you can’t get out of anything else?"
Simple question right? Well the answer I got was so moving, perhaps the woman who answered meant for me to take a deep look into myself, perhaps she was speaking from the heart only, regardless; I will never forget what she said. Her answer was simple. When she is on the horse, she is able to go places she is otherwise prohibited from entering.
Her example was the experience she has when the weather allows for riding through the woods. Through the woods, who cares about the woods? Something so simple, something I have taken for granted all these years! I am truly blessed; I am reminded of that each day. I appreciate my opportunity and my new appreciation. I am glad I met this woman, who, with one phrase, changed a bit of me for the better!"
